Dyed in green wool

I am a proud, dyed-in-the-wool Patrician — school, college, church, parish and then Canada — so St. Patrick’s feast day is personal. It falls right in the middle of Lent so may reflect his charism of joy rising out of resilience.

Huzzahs for Sr. Burns

Kudos to Sr. Helena Burns for her defence of faith and morals.  The Church is constantly under attack from outside and within. 

Unnecessary Act

I concur with your Feb. 20 editorial “Damaging Lies” in its non-partisan criticism of the Prime Minister’s “political lies” directed at the trucker “Freedom Convoy” protesters in Ottawa. He mendaciously called them a “fringe minority” of violent “racists.”  Many politicians, including two Liberal MP’s, voiced their disapproval of his “divisive and stigmatizing” comments.

Theology of me

Sr. Helena Burns’ Feb. 13 column “ Divide and Conquer? Never in Canada” raises the question of whether, in her world, the democratically elected government is the enemy of freedom. Is the sight of a military-style convoy of massive intimidating trucks, each one representing just one person, flying dual flags, blasting any opposition with their air horns, and illegally occupying and thwarting everyone else’s freedom really “glorious” to her?

Civility beats bigotry

His Eminence Cardinal Wilton D. Gregory’s appointment to lead the Archdiocese of Washington is nothing short of a divine achievement that parallels former U.S. President Barack Obama’s rise to power.

Fairness from Farrow

I would like to express my appreciation for Anna Farrow’s article “I did see a mob; it wasn’t the truckers.” The piece was fair and accurate in its insight given that Farrow was actually in Ottawa and able to judge what she saw. I liked, as well, her inclusion of the religious aspect of the protest, a fact that has not been noted. Canadians joined in the prayer even if they were not Catholics.

Sacramental solution

Sr. Helena Burns concludes her Jan. 30 column about media literacy with St. Paul’s description of the end times when humankind will be subject to a “powerful delusion” (2 Thessalonians 2:11). She believes our vulnerability to delusion stems from a failure to love the truth.

Open the churches

Many thanks to Dr. Pascal Bastien and Dr. Lucas Vivas for expressing so beautifully my own thoughts, and I’m sure those of many others, on the closure of our churches. We can only hope our bishops and priests are listening.

Red-letter day

Regarding Cardinal Collins celebrating his 75th birthday, His Eminence earned the love of Catholics across Canada when he wrote his letter of July 1, 2008, decrying the award of the Order of Canada to abortionist Henry Morgentaler.
