Perfect witness

November 30, 2025

Luke Mandato’s article “St. Michael’s standing with Christians for Red Wednesday” explains that it’s important for Catholics to support and pray for the many Christians persecuted worldwide.

Some of these Christians are martyred. The word “martyr” derives from the Greek word meaning “witness.” Catholics refer to Jesus as “King of Martyrs” since he gave perfect witness to the Truth by his sacrificial death. The Church has had many martyrs beginning with St.

Stephen who was stoned to death for proclaiming Jesus the Son of God. Tertullian wrote, “The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the Church.” When martyrs sacrifice their lives for Christ others are converted to the faith.
