Facing Fire
June 12, 2025
Pentecost is the birthday of the Church. Ours is a Church born of wind and fire, a Church of a fearful community made courageous. It seems that the parishioners in Newfoundland’s Portugal Cove South have an understanding of Church that is community-based rather than legal. They claim Holy Rosary as their place of worship. The diocese should listen and acknowledge that the $48,000 value of the building is insignificant in the larger picture of the $121 million needed to settle abuse cases. The diocese's Pentecost prayer that the Spirit "renew the face of the earth" could begin with recognizing the wind and fire in Portugal Cove South.
