An attempt to overturn a decision to not fly the Pride flag on Dufferin Peel Catholic school properties was defeated June 11.
Dufferin Peel Catholic District School Board trustees, in an emergency session, voted 6-3 against flying the Pride flag for the month of June — or any other flags beyond the Canadian, Ontario or municipal flags — outside board offices and schools. The vote was a turnaround from the committee level where trustees voted overwhelmingly in favour of flying the controversial flag.
A groundswell of opposition seems to have been enough to force trustees to change their minds, according to a release from Campaign Life Coalition.
"The significance of this victory cannot be understated,” said Josie Luetke, Campaign Life’s director of education and advocacy. “This victory is an incredible testament to the power of both prayer and grassroots lobbying.”
Multiple delegations from Campaign Life, Parents As First Educators (PAFE) and others mobilized to argue against flying the flag.
In April trustees voted not to fly the Pride flag, but trustee Brea Corbet, who was absent from the meeting where the decision was made, attempted to push through a motion to change that decision.
