St. Michael’s College School will induct its latest distinguished members into the Order of St. Michael Sept. 17.
The four — Brian Bellmore, Dr. Robert J. Birgenau, Dominic Montemurro and Joe Younder — will be bestowed with the Toronto school’s highest honour at a ceremony at the Liberty Grand Entertainment Complex in Toronto.
Bellmore graduated from St. Mike’s in 1960 and went on to a distinguished career in corporate and commercial litigation and during the 1990s was a board member of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto Raptors. He has spent much of his career giving back to the community and St. Michael’s while also serving on the board of directors of the National Catholic Broadcasting Council and Southdown Rehabilitation Centre.
Birgeneau, Class of 1959, is a renowned physicist and academic leader, including as president of the University of Toronto. He has championed equity in education and has been recognized for his work with the needy and marginalized.
Montemurro, a 1978 graduate, is president of the masonry company Medi Group and is a lifelong benefactor of the school. He has shown commitment to the school through alumni affairs and has been involved in many fundraising campaigns and renovation projects.
Younder, from the Class of 1956, taught for 24 years at the school, was a department head and debating coach. He also taught at other schools in Toronto, Ireland and Italy, and remained active post-retirement in the school’s alumni association.
A version of this story appeared in the August 24, 2025, issue of The Catholic Register with the headline "Four to be inducted into Order of St. Michael’s".
